Clean your phone to protect yourself from the coronavirus

Some of the main precautions that are recommended to prevent the spread of the coronavirus are washing your hands, disinfecting frequently used surfaces and not touching your face too much.

One of the most frequently touched areas, and that scientists have warned as dangerous due to the microorganisms it can harbor: angina streptococcus, MRSA and E. Coli, among others ... is the cell phone.

A study carried out in 2011 by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that one in six cell phones carried bacteria from human fecal matter. These phones were then in the kitchen, on the work desk and in many places of daily use and that also, the hands that touched these places then touched objects on public roads, ATMs, etc.

Statistically, the smartphone is seven times dirtier than a bathroom.

For these and other reasons, it is recommended to use microfiber cloths, 70% alcohol and swabs to sanitize the phone.

Samsung advises to clean the cell phone daily with a soft lint-free cloth, and once a week wipe it with a damp cloth. For its part, Apple recommends simply using a cloth. None of them suggest paper towels, as they can damage the surface of the device.

There are water resistant telephones (IP68 certified), in them it is possible to use alcohol and distilled water that must be sprayed with a sprayer and then cleaned with cotton swabs. Of course, always taking care that water does not enter the charging port, the headphones or the speakers.

With phones that are not waterproof it is advisable to use electronics safe antibacterial cleaning pads and wipe them on the screen as well as on the back.

Protective silicone, rubber or plastic covers can be washed with soap and water or detergent, and wooden covers with water and white vinegar that is sprayed. It is advisable to clean leather with a damp cloth or specific cleaner for this type of material.
