A part of the investigation on Facebook carried out by "The Wall Street Journal" affirms that Instagram causes mental health problems in relation to the self-esteem of adolescents.
The US newspaper has conducted an investigation on Facebook, accessing documents owned by the company with data that so far "minimized". As a result, some results to be considered were made public.
The first is that "32% of adolescents commented that when they already felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made it worse." In other words, the constant publication on the social network of stereotyped bodies of beauty and "ideally happy" lives can be harmful, especially in adolescent women.
This consequence is mainly explained by the fact that at that age they are in the middle of the construction stage of their identity and are compared with the images published on the Internet, which clearly has negative consequences.
Because of this, The Wall Street Jornal newspaper "assures" that Instagram "destroys and is toxic" for the self-esteem of adolescents, by directly influencing how they see and describe themselves.
The aforementioned statement was admitted by Facebook but always minimizing the issue.
During 2019 the platform had already recognized that the social networks of its properties worsened the problems of body image in one in three adolescent women and, that many of them, blamed Instagram for the increase in the rate of depression and anxiety.
Another extremely alarming fact that the research carried out was that 13% of British users and 6% of American users, related the desire to kill themselves as a result of the use of Instagram.
In conclusion, it is interesting to note that the damage that this can cause is incalculable, considering that more than 40% of Instagram users are people who are 22 years old or younger, that is, in their teens.
